How-To Geek Forums / Windows VistaWhere can I get decent SAFE screensavers?(15 posts)
Could anyone recommend where i could get good, free and safe screensavers. (I heard that many of the screensaver you can download CAN/MAY contain viruses and/or screw you system)
I am looking for some cool ones, for example the tunnel ones you see on Linux.
If anyone could recommend any, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Here is a nice one: http://www.tropicalwares.com/wallpacks.html And this one too: http://www.elefun-desktops.com/products/list/103
Scroll all the way down to 'Screensavers'. These are all Open Source Softwares, very safe. (In fact, the whole list of programs is worth a look for replacement of potentially bloated, unsafe applications.)
@ whs
thanks, but these are wallpapers & the links to the screensavers aren't Vista compat'
Sorry I sent you on a wild goose chase. I use
1. The fishtank from here (costs a few bucks but is real nice): http://www.geliosoft.com/?m3dfish301 2. I use my own picture files
This is slightly off topic but I'm wondering why would anyone want a different screen saver then the default one if the point of it is to be used when you are away from the computer where you can't see it anyways?
Some may like pretty colors, sentimental pictures, cool patterns. Others may want to prevent burn in, prying eyes and maybe, just maybe, to shake up their world a little bit by not using Microsoft's vision of what their computer should look like.
jd, if the machine is for private use, you are probably right (although I like my fishtank ,it soothes my nerves). But you have a lot of offices (Doctors, Optomologists, Insurance branches come to mind) where computers sit idle half of the day and in plain sight of the customers. There it is certainly nicer if the screen displays something pleasant.
Ok.
Burn in - I can see the point of a screen saver here except for one thing. There is also a 20 minute idle time where the monitor turns itself off thus saving the screen. Prying eyes - The same as Burn in unless this is such a problem that you need a screen saver set at 5 minutes. Offices - This makes since. Though in that case a blank screen would work just as well as most customers will be reading magazines or such anyways. Personal Use + Changing to a different one with pretty colors and such - This is one I don't get. If you use it for burn and prying eyes then you will be gone and can't see the different screen saver. I guess though some may want other people to see their own screen saver like the office idea above. Fish Screen Saver - I agree here. A fish tank screen saver is nice. I've used the one at http://www.serenescreen.com/. I didn't buy it though as I don't use screen savers. It is just nice to look at sometimes.
In short I guess I got it: Some people just like other people to see their screen saver. Kind of like how people clean their house when guests come over.
'I am looking for some cool ones, for example the tunnel ones you see on Linux.'
Do you mean like these?
Only trouble is they use CPU time, if you care about saving the environment you would just turn of your screen when you are not using it.
OK JD, since things don't make 'since' to you, I'll try to make some sense of it.
Few have their monitors set to turn off in 20 minutes. Have you ever worked in an office?
Screensavers can be set to turn on with the click of a button. Have you ever worked in an office?
Colors and such, not everyone uses their computers the whole time while at work or at home. Have you ever worked in an office ?
And yes, the Aquarium screensaver was the best I've ever seen. And I didn't even use it for any other reason then it looked realistic.
No, I have not worked in an office.
> 'Few have their monitors set to turn off in 20 minutes.' I was basing the idea on the fact the Windows defaults to turning off the monitor display in 20 minutes and not many know how to change that. > 'Colors and such, not everyone uses their computers the whole time while at work or at home.' Ok, that's good point. I didn't think about the whole using a desk for other things besides a computer idea. Though even still I think that a blank screen is less distracting if you have other things you are doing. I guess it's just personal preference.
GriZlore, You have to get used to that. We have these little side discussions all the time. That is our way of having fun.
